The Next Challenge For Conor McGregor Outside the UFC
It looks like the opportunities to make big money haven’t stopped flowing for UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor following his professional boxing debut loss to Floyd “Money” Mayweather back in August. Indeed, it seems that the Irish mixed martial artist may be taking the step into a ring of another time, with him looking to dip a toe into the world of professional wrestling this time around.
McGregor is apparently in talks to make an exclusive one-off appearance in the WWE against one of the wrestling world’s biggest stars, according to The Sun.
It looks like McGregor may be looking to appear on the WWE’s Wrestlemania card in April if all goes to plan. McGregor would be following in the footsteps of former women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey if this was the case, who appeared at Wrestlemania 31 alongside The Rock.
A source close to McGregor said: “Conor is a huge wrestling fan. His entire persona on stage he has developed from watching performers like Ric Flair and The Rock.
“These are the top dogs at self-promotion and trash talk. He watched these guys when he was younger.
“This is something he’s always wanted to do.
“The WWE guys have asked him to do shows before with them but the timing was never really right.
“But this time it looks like a deal is going to be locked into place.
“He has some things to tie up in the UFC before he can do anything else but this is a big money deal so I can’t see him turning it down.”
The chief brand officer for the WWE, Stephanie McMahon has said she believe McGregor would be a great addition to a WWE show. The wrestling promotion has been trying to lock McGregor down to appear on a show since before his bout with Mayweather was even announced.
“I think Conor would be a perfect fit for WWE,” said McMahon.
“He certainly has the personality, the athletic ability, the appeal. He speaks his mind, he is very genuine and authentic and he has a hell of a Vince McMahon swagger.”
“Never say never. I’d love to go into that WWE and have a real knock… Let one of them have a real knock and see what’s what,” said McGregor in an interview.
“But we’ll see. There’s conversations ongoing. I’ve turned down some things, the conversation’s still ongoing.”
