Cris Cyborg Leaves Holly Holm Looking Unrecognisable At UFC 219
The main event at UFC 219 saw two of the biggest names in mixed martial arts square off in front of a raucous T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Cris Cyborg became the second ever UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion when she destroyed Tonya Evinger at UFC 214 in July.
Her opponent, the former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm, said that the build-up to this clash felt similar to before she stunned the world by beating Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 two years ago.
“I think there are similarities with the feeling of [the Rousey fight]. Just knowing that people are kind of having a little bit of doubt,” Holm said in a pre-fight interview.
But the fact that she’s come in as the underdog and performed on the biggest stage in the world meant this time people weren’t writing her off like they had done in the past.
“I think that because I’ve done it more than once now, in boxing and then it’s probably been more seen with Ronda, to be the underdog and come in, I think that people think oh, okay, well, Holly is capable of doing some of these things. But I feel like there’s more of a curiosity behind it and not necessarily just thinking I can’t do it but kind of hmm, I wonder if she’s going to do it this time.”
Since losing her first ever pro MMA bout back in 2005, Cris Cyborg has been the definition of a wrecking ball whenever an opponent has dared to stand in her way.
She came into this one with a record of 18-1 (1 NC) with 16 of those 18 wins coming by way of knockout. But she was facing the most decorated striker in her career to date.
The bookies had Cyborg as the strong favourite at $1.26 while Holm was a rank outsider at $3.85.
A patient Cyborg waited for Holly to make the move early on, counter punching every attack from Holly. Although the fight went the distance, Holm really had no answers for Cyborg. Cyborg did not show any signs of fatigue, and tagged Holly over and over.

Cyborg successfully defended her UFC featherweight title to round out UFC 219.
Holm was left looking almost unrecognisable after taking significant damage to her face.
