Judge Adelaide Byrd In Strife For Controversial GGG-Canelo Scorecard

It’s always heartbreaking when a fight that has been so hotly anticipated and debated by fans and pundits alike results in controversy. With a huge lead up to the fight between Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, fans had clamoured to see just who out of the two boxing stars would take home the victory.

Unfortunately for those fans, the fight ended in a draw at the T-Mobile Arena at the weekend, with judge Adelaide Byrd delivering a particularly bad scorecard.

Two of the judges saw the fight as 115-113 (Golovkin) and 114-114, while Byrd handed in a score for Alvarez of 118-110, stunning fans. This means that Byrd scored TEN rounds of the fight for Alvarez, and just two round for Golovkin. Even Manny Pacquiao, who many believe won his fight against Australian boxer Jeff Horn despite a controversial loss, gave his opinion.

Top Rank VP of Operations had requested previously that Byrd not be involved in the bout between Vasyl Lomachenko and Nicholas Walters. “We respectfully requested that Adelaide Byrd not be assigned to this fight,” Top Rank VP of Boxing Operations, Carl Morett had said.

“From there it went on to a conversation [with NSAC executive director Bob Bennett] about how she is a good judge. Some judges can have good nights and can have bad nights. But when she has bad nights, she seems to be too far away from the score. Bob defended her left and right. He didn’t wanna listen to our objection.”

Now it seems Byrd is going to need to defend her judging, much in the same way as C.J. Ross did after she scored the bout between Floyd Mayweather and Alvarez as a draw.
