Old Rivals Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren Reunited at Last
Thirty-two years after they faced off in the Soviet Union in the iconic Rocky IV, Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren are set to reunite in another instalment of the classic boxing movie series. Stallone, who played Rocky Balboa across seven movies so far, will be back on screen with Lundgren, who played Ivan Drago in Rocky IV in the eighth film in the Rocky franchise, Creed 2.
Rocky IV saw Lundgren’s character Drago taking on Rocky’s good friend Apollo Creed in an exhibition match.
Apollo was later killed in the ring by the Russian powerhouse, prompting Rocky to seek revenge against Drago in a boxing match on Christmas Day in Moscow. Fans of the film will recall the famous line delivered by Drago following his match with Apollo, who declared “If he dies, he dies.”
The end of the film (spoiler ahead, if you somehow haven’t taken the time to see it!) sees Rocky taking the most savage beating of his life, eventually knocking out Drago in the final seconds of the bout.
Rocky would inspire thousands when he delivered another famous line to a world that was currently locked in the cold war. “If I can change and you can change, everybody can change!”.
Rocky would later be diagnosed with brain damage in Rocky V as a result of the bout and forced to retire from professional boxing, and would instead focus on turning up and coming boxers into champions.
After a few more instalments in the series, Rocky would pass on his boxing knowledge to Apollo’s son, Adonis, in the first Creed film. Lundgren’s character Drago is confirmed to now be included in Creed 2, which is set to come out in 2018.
Images of Lundgren training for the film have circulated on social media ever since, with the sixty-year-old actor looking to be in fantastic form leading up to production. Stallone, who is now in his seventies, also looks absolutely massive considering his age alongside Lundgren in the latest promotional shots to be released.
