WATCH: Liverpool Boxer’s Ear Nearly Raipped Clean Off in Fight
British boxer Stephen Smith hasn’t been on a win streak for over two years, but that hasn’t stopped him from putting his best foot forward and going to war.
The Commonwealth Games gold medallist took on Mexico’s Francisco Vargas over the weekend in a back and forth war that ended with his ear almost falling off.
The referee had to call a timeout during the ninth round in order to assess Smith’s left ear. Smith and Vargas had clashed heads earlier on in the fight, causing a tear to Smith’s ear and eventually seeing the referee waving the fight off due to the damage.
The ear looked mangled, with fans of mixed martial arts comparing it to the famous image of UFC bantamweight fighter Leslie Smith’s exploded cauliflower ear. Smith’s ear burst in a baptism of gore during the second round of her bout with Jessica Eye when she was punched in the ear, with the bout being ruled a TKO due to doctor stoppage.
Vargas was awarded a technical decision victory of 89-82, 88-83 and 88-83, moving to 24 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss in his professional boxing career. The thirty-two-year-old Smith has now floated the idea of retirement, having lost both a shot at the UBF super-featherweight title and the WBA super-featherweight title in the space of two years.
“This is boxing and I know having had two chances, I might only get one more shot,” said Smith following the fight. “For me, it is not about going back to British level, I want to win a world title and defeat can ruin that.”
Smith was inundated with messages of support following the loss. His ear was sewn up as soon as he’d arrived in hospital.
“Thanks very much for all your supportive messages last night, read them all and they mean a lot,” wrote Smith in a Twitter post. “Went to hospital and got my ear stitched back up so hopefully all will heal well.”
The images of Smith’s ear almost coming off are hard to watch, so definitely make sure you don’t have food in your mouth when you watch the clip below! Let us know what you think in the comments!
