WATCH: Melvin Manhoef Get Headkicked into Oblivion at Bellator 176
Bellator 176’s championship bout between Rafael Carvalho and Melvin Manhoef ended with fireworks on Saturday in Turin, Italy. Middleweight champion Carvalho managed to land an absolutely vicious head kick on Manhoef, who had been looking to be making decent headway against the champion in the first three rounds of the fight.
The Brazilian champion silenced any and all of his doubters who may have had lingering questions regarding his controversial win over Manhoef in May 2016 in Bellator’s middleweight tournament.
The first round saw Carvalho leading the dance, but Manhoef managed to score a takedown in the last minute of the round, managing to control the defending champion on the ground until the end of the round. The second and third round saw Manhoef being battered with shots to the body as Carvalho started to push the pace on the challenger, backing Manhoef up with strong jabs that seemed to put him off his game.
Eventually, Manhoef started to kick it up a gear, trying to get outstrike Carvalho and pick up some crucial rounds. Too bad for Manhoef, who ate a world ending left head kick that saw him clattering flat down to the canvas like a rag doll. The Dutch kickboxing and mixed martial arts veteran has been knocked out 11 times in his 96 fights across both sports, and it seems his chin may become a consistent issue for him moving forward in his career.
Carvalho’s record now sits at 14-1. His win over Manhoef marks Carvalho’s second defense of his Bellator title, having defeated Brandon Halsey for the middleweight strap at Bellator 144. Manhoef moves to a record of 2-3 during his time at Bellator, with his loss to Carvalho being his 14th loss in mixed martial arts. His overall record in mixed martial arts sits at 30-14-1.
