Chicago Bears star tight end Zach Miller is said to have come within minutes of potentially having his leg amputated following a horrifying knee dislocation while playing in the NFL. Miller had been playing against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at the Mercedes Benz Superdome.

The 33-year-old veteran whose career in the NFL spans over a decade was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery following an on-field incident where he jumped up to catch a pass and landed with his leg bent at an angle on a disallowed touchdown. Miller’s kneecap snapped under his weight and fell to the ground, writhing in pain.

David Chao, former NFL head team doctor, said that the injury suffered by Miller was a “true emergency” and that “early action” was what would save his leg.

“A minimum of two ligaments are torn. This is an injury like a knee dislocation.” Chao said in a tweet later in the day. According to the veteran doctor, Miller’s injury was so bad that an artery had torn in his leg.

The Chicago Bears went on to post a statement regarding Miller’s successful surgery.

“During our game at the New Orleans Saints yesterday, TE [tight end] Zach Miller sustained a serious injury to his left knee and immediate evaluation from our medical team on site rushed him to the nearby University Medical Center New Orleans (UMC) for urgent vascular surgery to repair a torn popliteal artery,” reads the statement.

“Successful surgery was performed immediately on Sunday by the UMC vascular surgeons to stabilize his injury. Zach remains at UMC, along with Bears medical personnel, where he will stay under further evaluation. We are thinking of Zach and his family and support from our entire organization goes out to them.”

It is likely that Miller will not be playing again for the Chicago Bears again anytime soon, with the team going on to the lose the game 20-12. Unfortunately, Miller’s play was not counted as a touchdown, which adds just a little more insult to injury.

The way his Miller’s bends in the video players below is absolutely cringe-worthy to watch, but we know you’ll want to see it anyway. Check out all the angles of Zach Miller’s injury below and let us know what you think!
