WATCH: UFC’s Amazing New Trailer for Cormier vs Jones

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones is of those guys that fans either love or love to hate. Easily one of the most physically gifted and talented athletes to ever enter the Octagon, Jones has made a career beating his opponent’s at their own game without ever truly looking like anyone can get the better of him. Winning the light heavyweight strap at just 23 years of age, Jones came into the sport young, and with high aspirations to go down as one of the best mixed martial artists ever known.

Unfortunately, his habit of getting into trouble outside the cage has become something of a legend to fans of the sport, who tend to get a little bit worried when Jones headlines the main event, and rightly so. Even the UFC seems to be concerned, adding two extra title fights to the UFC 214 card as insurance in case Jones is unable to make it into the cage for some reason.

A new video released by the UFC, UFC 214: Cormier vs Jones 2 “Tame Your Demons” explores Jones’ history with controversies, highlighting his multiple driving and DUI offences, his history of cocaine abuse, his brawl and ensuing feud with champion and rival Daniel Cormier, his hit and run car accident involving a pregnant woman and his most recent brush with the United States Anti-Doping Authority, who popped Jones for his use of a contaminated Cialis variant used to treat male impotence.

With such a checkered history, the UFC seems to be hoping to build on Jones’ redemption, and it certainly would make a good story if he can manage to stay on the right side of the law and the UFC’s performance enhancing drug testing partner, USADA.

Of course, Jones has come across as disingenuous in the past, only spending one night in rehab after testing positive for cocaine metabolites, and joking about his use of eye pokes as a weapon inside the octagon.

That’s not to say Jones can’t or won’t change, and with such a powerful story of redemption being set up for him, we’d certainly like to see him hit a home run with it.
